Jack Murphy - Movement

Jack Murphy is a choreographer, movement director and dance teacher based in London. He has worked extensively in film, television and theatre.

His work aims to complement and realise the Director’s vision and find a way, through working with the actors, to release the physical potential of the given moment.

His breadth of knowledge in the field of movement enables him to support the Director’s need for specific detail. This can range from the period movement of such films as Vanity Fair or Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day through to the more contemporary physicality and choreography required for Bridget Jones and Starter for Ten!

He has facilitated the work of Directors such as Peter Gill, Mira Nair, Nick Hytner, Marianne Elliott, Di Trevis, Bharat Nalluri, Gurinda Chada, Jean Marc Valle and worked with the likes of Emily Blunt, James McAvoy, Reece Witherspoon, Cate Blanchett, Colin Firth, Renee Zellweger, Daniel Craig, Frances McDormand, Ciaran Hinds and Gwyneth Paltrow.

His theatre work has taken him, in the case of the History Boys, from the National Theatre to the West-End and subsequent productions of the play on Broadway and L A. He has helped to create the physical language of such plays as The Voysey Inheritance, The London Cuckolds, The False Servant and Remembrance of Things Past at the National Theatre.

Dances that he can teach range from those of the Middle Ages and early Renaissance (Carole, Brawls, French Basse Dance) through to the refined dances of the High Renaissance (Pavanne, Galliard, Almain, Coranto). His repertoire includes dances from the 17th and 18th Century (Dances of the Regency period, English Country Dance, Sarabande, Gigue, Minuet), the 19th Century (Waltz, Polka, Quadrille) and the 20th Century social dances; ballroom (Waltz, Foxtrot, Quickstep, Tango) and Latin American (Rumba, Cha Cha, Jive).
